Mannequin got down and dirty with Sauce kid. You can't get any more real than this stud...He talks about girls, Terry G & Jesse Jags 'swagga jacking', very importantly, the phenomenal that is lace front wigs, his new project, his style, the music industry and much more. This is one interview you do not want to miss...Read Every Word
Let's starts with the fact that u r d original "fine boy" do you have any crazy fan stories?
Na me be fine boy. Girls like me & they show it. I'm pretty active with the females as they are with me. So its all love.
1. As the original Naija Swagga guy, Swag means........? You actually said last year that if someone hasn't driven a S-500 benz, then they don't have swag.Do you still think that? ---»
For the most part, that bit of d conversation was taken outta context. I was merely stating that swag speaks for itself. People recognize the good living, high roller attitude, celebrity presence of some people more than other artists. The reference to the S 500 Benz pretty much just used Benz a Marquee Brand in the Motor Industry. It aint even that serious. Swag is swag. Sinzu is d new swag
2. You were quoted as saying that Terry G and Jesse Jagz are "swagger jackers".There's obviously no beef between you guys. Do you think that statement was taken out of context at that time? ------»
Jesse jags had a song titled 'jagga swagga' that I didn't agree with. No beef. Stated my opinions about it. Terry G, that's another story entirely. 'Swagga swagga' was something I was on 4years ago or so, so Terry G claiming to be 'Mr 2009 swagga swagga' when he probably never heard the term until I used it was just comical, hence; I had my reservations about that issue. I could argue that yeah, the statement was taken outta context then. Either way, to each its own. But honestly, that's soo past tense & its totally irrelevant as of today.
3. You gone from the traditional hip-hop look to the rock n roll look. What brought that about? Was it a conscious decision? --------»
I mean sauce is all about trying things that work for me. I'm a dynamic being, I am inspired by many things, culture, fashion, style etc. The Mohawk was something that played its role for me, no one ever saw me on a Mohawk, & I had never had one until the 'Na me be fine boy video' in South Africa. Hip-hop is something I adopted from interest and inspiration. I would say it was a conscious decision to go with that look, 'cos I expected attention from it and its played its part.
4. Where do you shop? ------»
I'd walk in a store that had something I wanted. I like a variety of fits, colors, styles, etc. Anything that expresses how I wanna be perceived. Its me.
5. You're a massive female lover and at every opportunity you get, you shout out your female fans. What if you didn't have that female fanbase, would you still make music? And would it be of a different caliber? --------»
The females are cool! They pay me some attention, and I say hello back to them, as a cool headed dude should. I wouldn't say I love the females as much as it may be perceived, but I do enjoy spending time with ladies. It's always been that way with me. I do enjoy shouting out my female fans 'cos I want em to know I remember them. They do alot of good things to me and for me. If I didn't have a female fanbase I'd still make music. It would have to be music that catered to the male gender I guess. Maybe more reality kinda music, but hey I love what I'm doing now.
6. Guys complain a lot about certain trends ladies are into. Is there a recent female trend you just don't get or don't like? ------»
I guess the trend In Nigeria for female fashion & beauty is the lace front wigs, they cost so much and yet everyone looks alike with it on. They all look exotic until the gum from beneath starts to peel and show forth. That's straight up jokes after that.
7 You ideal woman would look and act like.............»
I like a girl who can keep me at home wit her so I don't have to go out spending money wilding out looking for some cheap, no good, fun. That's soo played out. In fact being a player is played out in my opinion. But hey, dating is a game & all players are welcome. My ideal woman gets along with me and completes me. Bottom-line.
8. Going back to music, you were saying last year about the issue with piracy in the music industry. Have you personally seen any changes? --------»
Its an ongoing process. Sooner or later, music is gonna be purchased by some legal retailers and also digital media will pick up in Nigeria with the fiber optics which have been introduced this year, let's wonder what happens to pirates when we go digital. U no fit pirate internet.
9. If you were put in the position to fix this issue, what exactly would you do? -------»
I'd just update our generation into digital media, cut a couple of deals with the big brands in the digital media world, come with a proposal with loads of profit making prospects, its just a matter of structure. Every top rated musician in Nigeria can sell almost 10 thousand downloads easily so imagine when that's the only means of getting music. I guess its just a thought in my head. I think a lot.
11. As for Nigerian artists making it in the international market. Is this something that you think is important? Is it achievable? Previously, British Mcs weren't really competing in the International market but they are there now and are rocking the charts with commercial artists. -------»
Music has evolved and it currently lives in Africa, Nigerians picked up on it quicker that many and that's why we shine. Nigerians are everywhere and we're usually built to wanna come back to our own and associate with our culture n celebrities as well. We're achieving it now.
12. Besides yourself, Which Nigerian artists are hot right now? -------»
Everyone gets a run. Its how u manage that run that determines if you're going to fly. D'banj is flying, Wande is flying. M.I is having his run at d moment. I don't pay much attention to the demographics.
13. What's on repeat on you ipod at the moment? -------»
I don't have an ipod. I usually listen to music off my phone, in d car, or in d studio, everywhere else I'm cracking a joke or laughing at one.
14. Would you want to diversify into fashion or TV or film or anything else like some other artists have? For example D'banj-Koko Mansion and Durella with his Sneaker line.Have you got a pair of Durella's sneakers? --i-----»
Yes I'd love to. It will make sense to have everyone in tune with sauce kid to follow the sauce kid brand. So it's a possibility.
15. Your music is fresh and it's hot, I love Under G.what inspired that? ------»
Studying the market. I'd party with Don Jazzy in d island night life in Lagos. We'd club hop, listen to what's being played, check out what people are dancing to, check out which songs get more than 2spins a night and why etc. 'Cos I have to know the crowd I'm appealing to and what moves them. Under g was the kinda sound they'll cling onto. So I just put my sauce in it and Jazzy put that jazz on it & now its all butter. Video for Under G was shot n directed by Bobby Boulders for Storm Records.
16. What continually inspires you? What actually makes you pick up a pen and get in the studio? -------»
Thoughts. My mind has been trained to continually find ways to express myself. And also the art and skill of rhyming with many languages, accents, gives me more to experiment with. Usually I'd write on my phone. Most times I write on my phone 'cos I think it helps me when I can think on the spot, jot down. I remember once I came up with a song entitled keep it pushing produced by Eldee from sitting in the studio. The whole subject matter was about stuff pulling you back, but u know where you're from, and you know where you're headed, so even though your journey pass your waka, you still 'gots' keep it pushing. The whole idea of the song came to me once. And I started writing. Rehearsed as I went ahead and after the 3rd verse I was done. I completed the song & I must add, its one of the freshest jams I have. Look forward to it. ---------------
17. Do you ever get writer's block? Do you ever get song-envy? That's when you hear a song you love and wish it was your song. -------»
I have before. But then I changed my patterns, manner of coming up with lyrics. See back in 05 wen I started rapping, I'd be thinking of punchlines and crafty ways of getting a praise response from my listener. Now I just think of anything and make sense with it. So that way, I always have a way of associating my next sentence with the previous one and in all making the whole song cohesive. You can't get writers block that way. Try it.
18. Do you consider yourself a Hip-Hop artist? --------»
Yes I do. I also consider myself a recording artist, performing artist, songwriter, composer. As I have become all these titles over my 5year career in naija music. My performances are the most electrifying parts of my whole music gig. Why? 'Cos I get to duplicate the attitude and emotions of each word, verse, song etc.
19. What is up with Hip-Hop these days.I'm in no position to speak but it seems like to get an international hit song as a Hip-Hop artist, you'd have to infuse Hip-Hop/Rap with FunkyHouse, Dance or Rock, like Kanye, Wayne, Dizzee Rascal and every other British artist. I'm probably wrong, please correct me if I am. --------»
In hip-hop once u have a following u have your audience. Whatever u put out is what it is. Now getting a hit song is not strategic. A normal song can be the hit record if the masses catch on to it virally. In my opinion. Others may argue differently, but dis is my interview. Lol.
20. I'm sure this year is going to be pretty hot for you. What exactly can we expect from you? What project have you got coming up? Are you touring this year? Where? ------»
I'm currently in new york. Mastering my album titled African American. I look forward to its release. I've worked hard overtime and I think this year I'd have an advantage with the press, TV, radio media because its put in some work which is barely scratching the surface
I also have a mixtape titled "DaRipOff" which will be released online virally for my true hip-hop lovers. To keep a balance of music out there for my audience. Its 2000n Mine
Fuck what ever y'all claim, the swagga word will always be the same.....so whats the shit bitch its magin
